Street Fatalities Drop by 42 Percent

The Jakarta Police's traffic operation code 'Zebra Jaya' has led to a drop in street fatalities, an officer said Thursday. City police's deputy director of traffic Adj. Sr. Comr. Yaya Ahmudiarto said the number of fatalities during the 10-day operation from Aug. 10 to 19, was down to 176 from 306 over the same period just before the operation.

“Comparing those figures, we conclude the Zebra Jaya operation was a success; it decreased the number of streets fatalities by 42.48 percent,” Yaya told a press conference. Ironically, the number of traffic violations during the operation jumped by 73.07 percent. Most of the violations occurred in North Jakarta.
