Extreme weather in Indonesia From today

Potentially extreme weather conditions occurred in parts of Indonesia from 28 to 30 August. Potential was seen from the persistence of low pressure areas of activity in the Pacific Ocean north of Papua and the meeting place of wind that extends from the middle part of Sumatra, Natuna Sea, South China Sea to the Pacific Ocean east of the Philippines.

Another factor is still warm sea temperatures in Indonesian waters north of the equator. In addition, the humidity in the northern part of Indonesia and around the equator is high enough.

These conditions support the growth of rain clouds in the territory of Indonesia, especially the northern part of Indonesia and around the equator. The existence of local-scale atmospheric activity in parts of Indonesia also needs to watch out for potentially heavy rains accompanied by strong winds and lightning in the not too long.

Areas with a potentially heavy rains accompanied by lightning and strong winds are the west coast of Sumatra; northern Sumatra and central, northern East Kalimantan and east of West Kalimantan; western Java; Sulawesi north, west, and center. The same weather conditions also potentially occur in the northern Maluku, West Papua, Papua, and Papua, the eastern part of the north.

85 Percent of Indonesian Journalists Not Understanding of Journalism Ethics Code

According to the research results of Journalism Indonesia Alliance (AJI) in 2006, found that 85 percent of journalists in Indonesia have never read and understand the code of journalistic ethics.

According Alamudi Abdullah, Chairman of the Public Complaints Commission, the Press Council, it was because the number of media that emerged after the New Order era ended. The number of media causes everyone can be a journalist without adequate supplies.

"In the New Order era there were only 289 media, four years after Suharto stepped down, the media jumped to 1,800. Where human resources," he said at the Press Council Building, Jakarta, Thursday (27 / 8) night.

Other causes, he added, until now there has been no school really is for people who want to become journalists. "In fact, many who want to be a journalist. Because journalists are also still has a high social value," he said.

In addition, many journalists who feel a journalistic code of ethics is only limited space for them. "From the 40 participants said that journalism courses can not write a story if it follows the existing code of ethics," he explained.

Alamudi regretted it. According to him, without understanding the code of ethics, a journalist will not balance in preaching. This is detrimental the media as a whole. "The reason people will judge all the media poorly. Considered too far," he said.

He said, to overcome that problem, the Press Council was trying to socialize the importance of understanding the code. "Journalists should read the Act of Journalism who is only 11 chapters. If I can actually read the other rules, too," he said.

It asked that the statement was made by addressed to BRTI secara and if there are violations of commitments-commitments above, then the RIM should be willing to risk and legal consequences in accordance with the provisions of the laws and regulations applicable in Indonesia.

"And if such an affidavit has been submitted to the Administrator and BRTI, then as quickly RIM will regain their rights to use RIM to immediately apply for certification could be suspended / frozen by the Directorate General of Post and Telecommunications," said Gatot S. Dewa Broto.

TNI Involvement Should be Confirmed

The regulation of National Defense Forces (TNI) involvement in military operation besides war should be confirmed, National Police (Polri) Chief Gen Bambang Hendarso Danuri said on Monday. "There should a real regulation of TNI involvement in military operation besides war, such as in the management of terrorism," the national police chief said after attending a presentation ceremony of a medal of honor to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono by Army’s Special Troops Command (Kopassus).

The medal was presented to the President by Army Chief of Staff General Agustadi Sasongko Purnomo at a ceremony at the Kopassus Headquarters in Cijantung, East Jakarta. Bambang Hendarso said the TNI active role in military operation besides war such as terrorism management could be formulated, based on the evaluation of joint TNI and Polri exercise in the management of terrorism.

"Yes, we have to evaluate the result of joint exercise in 2008 and in October this year to find out what the TNI and Polri can do in the military operation besides war. Now we do it in accordance with our agreement in the field," he said. The national police chief said the coordination and cooperation between TNI and Polri have run well at lower level, but in the future there should be a legal umbrella.

Meanwhile, Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono said on the occasion that besides the police, the TNI could also take action against the actors of terrorism. Adjustment of Air Transport Agreements between Indonesia and EU

Indonesia and the European Union (EU) are seeking to adjust their air transport agreements following the lifting of an EU flight ban on four Indonesian airlines in mid-July. "I have just received a report on the matter. To be sure, there has been common understanding and perception of civil aviation in the two regions and of harmonization process to increase flight safety," Transportation Minister Jusman Syafii Djamal said here on Thursday.

The EU had invited the Indonesian aviation authorities to a meeting on initial agreement on certain other aspects of air services on August 17, in Brussels, Belgium, he said. Head of the Transportation Ministry’s Public Communication Center Bambang S Ervan said the meeting was a horizontal meeting between Indonesia and the 27-nation bloc.

At the meeting the Indonesian government was represented by Director General of Air Transportation Herry Bakti and the EU by Gilles Gantelet, he said. Bambang said articles in the air transport agreements the two sides adjusted and discussed at the meeting dealt among others with designation by member state, safety, taxation of aviation fuel, and compatibility with competition rules.

"Actually, the matter has been discussed with EU member states. But the discussion came to a standstill following the EU flight ban on the Indonesian airlines. Now that the ban has been lifted they (the EU) invited us to discuss it," he said.

Religious Leaders Told to be Vigilant

Religious leaders across the city have been told to be watch out for suspicious activities in their neighborhoods that could lead to terrorism.

As influential figures in their communities, religious leaders are expected to disseminate information across their communities to prevent their neighborhoods from being infiltrated by terrorist cells, Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Wahyono said Thursday.

He said different interpretations of religious teachings, possibly at the root of terrorism, might have spread across the community as a result of residents’ indifference , or tolerance of each other.

“Most people are unwilling to find out about other people’s business, and easily welcome new people into their communities as their relatives, just because they are also Muslim. They are not vigilant enough,” he said in front of some 700 participants at a briefing on terrorist threats.

Members of several religious forums attended the briefing, including the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), the Indonesian Church Union (PGI), Persada Hindu, representatives of the Buddhist community in Indonesia (Walubi) and the High Council of Confucianism (Matakin).

“A repositioning of our political stance is currently underway. The option is either to cooperate or not. The final call will be made by [PDI-P chairwoman] Megawati Soekarnoputri,” PDI-P legislator Eva Kusuma Sundari told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

“There is a likelihood Megawati will approve [the endorsement of Taufik]. I am holding my breath now,” she said.

AN Indonesian maid who killed her elderly employer some four years ago was jailed for life on Thursday. The decision by the Court of Appeal came nearly two years after Barokah, 29, was first sentenced to life imprionment in 2007 and four years after the killing.

In October 2005, Barokah got into a scuffle with Madam Wee Keng Wah when the 75-year-old chided her for sneaking out to meet a man. The maid knocked Madam Wee unconscious during the fight, then tipped her out of the window down nine floors.

The High Court jailed her for life but Barokah appealed. The Court of appeal felt the psychiatric evidence was 'uncertain' and sent the case back for a further hearing. But the re-hearing ended with the same outcome - a life term.

High Court judge Tay Yong Kwang said his views had not changed - Barokah posed as a danger to society as there was a probability she might hurt or kill again.

Barokah appealed a second time. On Thursday, the Court of Appeal dismissed her appeal and upheld Justice Tay's decision that she should be put away for life.(from: KOMPAS.com)

Indonesia and Malaysia will step up efforts to fight terrorism, which will be discussed when President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak meets.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda said he, however, could not yet give the date for the meeting, but possibly it would be in October before Susilo's inauguration as president of the republic for the second term.

Indonesia Kaya Benda Seni
